LAS VEGAS — More than 160 AFSCME members gathered in Las Vegas last week to lift up the voice of public service workers and move our union forward.

Pamela Knight, a child protective investigator with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Service (DCFS), was sent to check on the welfare of a child last fall.

The UW has not met with any unions about wages and pay yet. WFSE’s union bargaining team is working on pay proposals to get raises for everyone.

We are also working on getting increases for groups of workers who are behind the market, and are not getting paid as much as similar employees who work at other governments and private companies.

At the Washington State Labor Council Convention in Wenatchee, Local 3488 UW Laundry workers were awarded the Mother Jones Award:

Mother Jones said “Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living”. This year’s recipients of the Mother Jones Award do exactly that.


Management completed their non-economic proposals.

Our strength in numbers resulted in some good news regarding some of the MOU's they wanted to roll over and continue for the next agreement. Those MOU's involved some premium and certification pays in the medical centers and laundry. Another reason to keep supporting our members at consolidated laundry!

This was day two of bargaining for our locals: Local 3488 (Harborview/Laundry) and Local 1488 (Campuswide/UWMC).

We'll start with a small but important win: Some members of the teams were getting pushback regarding being released for the talks. It appears that has been resolved and we should be at full strength going forward.

The team presented nearly all of the non economic proposals initial proposals. Those are all the issues (except pay issues) members shared with the team and local leadership.

WFSE's UW Bargaining Team, consisting of WFSE members from Local 1488 and Local 3488 began negotiations on our 2019-21 contract.

Our bargaining team spent a grueling, but in the end productive, all-day session  on ground rules.  

The major hang up was getting the employer to commit to making a good-faith effort to get team members released for bargaining, including helping to adjust schedules in an effort to avoid bargaining on a scheduled days off, and putting in writing the operational reason for denial of release or schedule changes.  

In October 2017, Mihret Tirfu, a Hospital Assistant at Harborview Medical Center was unjustly medically separated after 17 years at Harborview.

As a union member, her separation was challenged by WFSE and headed to arbitration but the employer settled in mediation after hundreds of signatures demanding Mihret be returned to work were delivered to management.

When he first took a job at the Centralia Correctional Center in Illinois, Keith Kracht knew that a career in public service wouldn’t make him a millionaire. But then again, that’s not why he went into public service.
