Across the nation, women are creating change for working families more than ever before. The Women’s Leadership Academy is ready to train more AFSCME women to be leaders of that change.

It’s not a secret that drug prices in the United States are rising much faster than inflation.

Like others around the world, I mourned the death last week of Aretha Franklin. The Queen of Soul set a new standard for enduring classic songs with both artistic and political impact, like her mega-hit “Respect,” which became an anthem for both the civil rights and women’s movements.

And that song is on my mind as we embark on a week of action dedicated to shining light on the stakes for women in the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Our teams experienced a frustrating session bargaining with the UW on Monday.

The more we respond to some of management's language, the more it looks they don’t want to prioritize classified staff issues. The mostfrustrating issue — among many frustrating proposals — was one to make probation for transfer go from six weeks to six months.

I’m from South Dakota. It’s a right to work state. I'd like to share my experience and why I'm #UnionStrong.

The average salary of state workers in South Dakota is close to half to two-thirds of what workers in Washington make. The cost of living there is about the same as Spokane, cheaper than Seattle.

Another tough slog with the employer

While a couple of good things are close being settled they still push back and try to control our stewards — "well if we pay them we think we should have some control came across the table."

Our team is getting very frustrated about some of the hills management seems to want to force us to die on.

The UW has not met with any unions about wages and pay yet. WFSE’s union bargaining team is working on pay proposals to get raises for everyone.

We are also working on getting increases for groups of workers who are behind the market, and are not getting paid as much as similar employees who work at other governments and private companies.

Our union bargaining team is working on proposals to get targeted raises for workers.

At the Washington State Labor Council Convention in Wenatchee, Local 3488 UW Laundry workers were awarded the Mother Jones Award:

Mother Jones said “Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living”. This year’s recipients of the Mother Jones Award do exactly that.
